Is Ireland a Vanilla Nation? Lidl's Bakery Candles Ignite the Valentine's Day Debate

New research reveals that we’re a ‘Vanilla Nation’ when it comes to romance—but that’s no bad thing!

This Valentine’s Day, Lidl Ireland is embracing the nation’s love for vanilla with a new range of bakery-inspired candles, designed to create the perfect cosy, romantic atmosphere. New research commissioned by Lidl reveals that vanilla is the most appealing scent for Irish romantics, with nearly one-third (31%) saying it appeals most to their romantic side. One in five even associate vanilla with their current or ideal partner, proving that soft, sweet, and endlessly charming is the way to our hearts.

But being a ‘Vanilla Nation’ in love isn’t as dull as it sounds—quite the opposite. Lidl’s research also found that comfort is key for Irish couples, with 54% of adults linking the scent of freshly baked goods to feelings of contentment, happiness, and warmth. And when it comes to Valentine’s plans, almost a third (29%) of Irish romantics say their ideal date is a cosy evening in.

Lidl’s new candle range, inspired by its beloved in-store bakery, is designed to enhance that perfect romantic setting—whether it’s a breakfast in bed, an indulgent chocolate treat, or a Parisian café-inspired moment.

The Science of Scent and Romance

“Scent plays a powerful role in romance,” says Frances Kelleher, Ireland’s award-winning Dating and Relationship Expert. “We often choose our partners based on scent, as it’s our pheromones that create that chemistry—or lack thereof. Scent has the unique ability to evoke strong emotions and memories, making it an ideal way to set the mood for Valentine’s Day. It can instantly transport us to a specific time and place, as the olfactory bulb, which governs our sense of smell, is directly connected to the hippocampus, our memory center, and the amygdala, the brain’s emotional hub.”

Lidl’s research confirms the power of scent, showing that 50% of Irish adults associate the scent of baked goods with happiness and cosiness. And with vanilla reigning supreme as the most romantic scent, Lidl’s Patisserie of Dreams candle offers the perfect way to embrace the nation’s love for warm, familiar, and inviting aromas.

“It’s no surprise that 29% of people associate vanilla with their partner or ideal partner,” says Kelleher. “Vanilla is sweet, not overpowering, and has a soft, comforting scent. It’s reliable and always pleasing – qualities you want in a relationship.”

Creating Memorable Romantic Experiences at Home

“It’s the consistent, little acts of kindness that make people feel appreciated,” says Kelleher. “You can do this any day, not just on Valentine’s Day. For example, make your partner breakfast in bed or even just a cup of tea. Run a bath for your partner. Give them a massage. There are five types of love languages—words of affirmation, quality time, physical touch, acts of service, and receiving gifts—and if you do something to do with your partner’s language, you cannot lose. Lidl’s candles complement all the love languages and create a memory of your partner appreciating and cherishing you. Candles can also create a relaxing, ambient, candlelit night in and create an instant romantic atmosphere that will make an everlasting romantic memory.”

The bakery-inspired candle range will be available in Lidl stores nationwide from January 30th. At just €3.99 for a 160g pack containing four delightful scents, it’s the perfect affordable gift for yourself or a loved one this Valentine’s Day.
